Student Independence Day

At Belmont Elementary School we are dedicated to developing well-rounded students. In an effort to support this, we want to work with parents to develop student-leaders who have ownership of their school and empower them with the confidence to transition independently in their school.

Belmont Elementary School will recognize August 27th as “Student Independence Day” in an effort to support students walking to class by themselves in the morning.

In addition to promoting added school safety, we want our students to develop independence and confidence that will serve them well in the classroom. We also want our teachers to make the most of their instructional time, including the morning time before school. This preparation time is a very busy time for our teachers and students and teachers must monitor students and attend to instructional duties. Parents should schedule meetings with teachers at other times if personal conversations are needed.

With this in mind, “Student Independence Day” for the 2018-2019 school year will begin Monday, August 27, 2018. On that date and thereafter, we are requesting that students walk to class “independently.” Parents may walk the students to the outside door if they wish, and then students should walk from the entrance to their classroom. Staff members will be present at the back entrance the week of August 27 to make sure this transition happens smoothly.

We are confident that the beginning days of school will provide our students – including our younger children – with sufficient time to adjust to the new school year before August 27.

We ask for all parents to assist the school in making this a positive experience for our students and teachers and in helping us to maximize our instructional time.  If your child has specific needs, please contact your child’s teacher.

If you need to speak with a staff member in the morning, please enter through the main entrance and come to the office and sign in with the secretary. Please also be reminded that drop-off time for students begins at 8:00 AM.

Thank you for your cooperation in recognizing “Student Independence Day” on August 27!
