Welcome Back

Welcome to the opening of another school year!  As you are aware, Pleasants County Schools take great pride in maintaining a tradition of excellence.  As superintendent, I challenge our faculties to take ownership of their schools, to foster a school climate that is nurturing and a culture that does not accept failure.  I encourage our students to become actively involved in their studies and in the extracurricular activities at their school.  On the same token, I encourage parents to play an active role in their child's education both at home and at school.  Collectively we can accomplish great work and our students will be very successful.  At the start of each school year, I think it is important we remind parents of certain district policies that are impactful for every student as follows: More +

Required Student Health Checkpoints for 18-19 School Year

Children who are healthy do better in school, live longer, have more productive lives and higher self-esteem. Please work with your child’s medical provider, Dentist and school to make sure your child has a great future and healthy smile! Starting in the 2018/19 school year, new students entering PreK or Kindergarten and students entering grades 2, 7 and 12 should show proof of a dental examination and HealthCheck/comprehensive health examination prior to entry into school. If your child is going into kindergarten and did not provide proof of a dental examination in PreK, proof will need to be provided for kindergarten enrollment.

Upcoming School Calendar Changes

Please allow me to extend my sincere appreciation for your support of our school employees during the recent work stoppage. We are so excited to be back in school and working with our students.  School systems have been directed to make every effort to recoup as much instructional time as possible.  The plan to accomplish this task was carefully thought out and every option considered.  As such, the following changes have been made to our school calendar...

Superintendent's Message - Work Stoppage

Pleasants County Schools has always placed a high priority on providing our students a quality education.  The greatest resource we have in our communities is our children and we take great pride in the responsibility of educating our students.  In order for our school system to be successful, we must consistently have a highly effective workforce.  We in Pleasants County Schools do not view ourselves as a workforce but a team.  We do not see our work as a job but a blessing to educate our youth.  Understanding the importance and value of our team, our professional and service employees deserve and need our support as they work with our State legislature to secure competitive wages and benefits.  West Virginia ranks 49th out of 50 states in teacher pay and its school employees have not had a raise in many years.  The significant increases in insurance premiums have outpaced salaries... New Lockdown Procedure (A.L.I.C.E.)

Pleasants County Schools has adopted a new strategy for lockdown procedure known as the A.L.I.C.E. plan. A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate.  Prior to the A.L.I.C.E. plan, lockdown procedures involved the staff locking their doors, moving the students to a part of the room where they could not be seen, and quietly remaining there until an “all clear” announcement was given.  The A.L.I.C.E. plan offers a different philosophy in light of school violence.  The philosophy of A.L.I.C.E. is to use technology and information in a way so that staff and students can make informed decisions in a crisis, remove as many people as possible from the danger zone, and provide realistic training so that those involved in a crisis have a better chance of surviving.  More +
