Important information for parents of students in Grades K-3 Math and Reading Proficiency Notifications

Dear Parents of Students in Grades K-3:

When the West Virginia Legislature passed the “Third Grade Success Act” (HB 3035) in Spring 2023 it included many new requirements for each county school system and some of those requirements will be noticeable to parents.

Although Pleasants County Schools has already been doing so, the Act requires that each student in grades K-3 be tested with a “benchmark” three times per school year to assess their reading and math proficiency. The Act then requires that the school notify the parents of the child’s progress with these tests and if they have a deficiency in reading, math, or both.

To comply with this requirement, parents of students in grades K-3 will receive a “Notification of Reading and Math Benchmark Progress” Report at the beginning, middle, and end of year benchmark times. You will see your child’s current benchmark score for reading and math and if they are above or below the “cut score” to be considered on level or deficient. If your child is deficient in either area, you will be provided with the strategies the school may use to address the deficient area and strategies you can use at home to help your child.

This progress report will be in addition to the ELRS Report (grade K) or Report Card (grades 1-3.)

A sample of the notification letter you will receive can be accessed here: BLANK NOTIFICATION LETTER

The schedule for these reports will be as follows: (*subject to change if there are school cancellations.)

Beginning of Year: Thursday, September 28

Middle of Year: Thursday, February 1

End of Year: Thursday, May 9

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or principal.
