Resource 1: GSA Parent Information

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Schools will administer the West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) for Grades 3-8 this spring. The WVGSA is a test measuring academic progress for students and schools in West Virginia.

The WVGSA is an untimed test administered online. All public school students will participate in the WVGSA at the grade level in which they are enrolled, unless they meet the criteria for participation in the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment.

Students in Grades 3-8 will take the English language arts (ELA) reading, ELA writing, and mathematics tests, with students in Grades 5 and 8 also taking the science test.

Student scores will be accessible to parents/guardians shortly after the completion of a content area test. You will be able to see your child’s scores by clicking View My Results (https://wv.portal.cambiumast.com/) and using the access code provided by your child’s school.

For additional information on the WVGSA, visit this site: https://wvde.us/academics/assessment/general-summative-assessment.

Your student’s school will provide you with more information about the assessment, including the testing dates for this year’s administration. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the principal or counselor at your student’s school, or the county test coordinator at your county’s board of education office.

I respectfully request that you encourage your student to do their best on the WVGSA this spring.

Sincerely,

Michele L. Blatt

State Superintendent of Schools

Resource 2: SAT-SD Parent Information

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Schools will administer the SAT School Day to Grade 11 students this spring. The SAT School Day is a nationally recognized college- and career-readiness assessment from the College Board.

Because this test is West Virginia’s high school accountability exam, all public school students in Grade 11 will participate in the SAT School Day, unless they meet the criteria for participation in the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment.

The SAT School Day will be administered online at your student’s high school or a county- approved off-site location during a regular school day. Students will NOT pay a fee to take this test. Each school will provide additional information regarding their plans for testing, including this year’s test date.

The SAT School Day is accepted at colleges and universities throughout West Virginia and the nation for both college admissions and placement. The test also can be used to qualify for the PROMISE Scholarship.

Students receive scores in reading/writing, math, and science. Student scores will appear in each student’s College Board account a few weeks after they complete the test. Students who provide their cell phone number when taking the test will receive a link to download the College Board’s BigFuture™ Schools application, which will allow students to retrieve scores on their phone and access college and career planning resources.

For additional information on the SAT School Day, visit this site: https://wvde.us/academics/assessment/sat-school-day.

I respectfully request that you encourage your student to do their best on the SAT School Day this spring. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the school or the county board of education office.

Sincerely,

Michele L. Blatt

State Superintendent of Schools

Resource 3: WVASA/ DLM Parent Information

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Schools will administer the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment (WVASA), also known as the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) Assessment, in Grades 3-8 and 11 this spring. The WVASA supports student learning and measures what a student with the most significant cognitive disabilities knows and can do.

The WVASA is an untimed test administered online. All public school students who meet the participation criteria for alternate assessment outlined in The Participation Guidelines for West Virginia State Assessments and Policy 2419 Regulations for the Education of Students with Exceptionalities will participate in the WVASA at the grade level in which they are enrolled.

Students in Grades 3-8 and Grade 11 will take the English language arts and mathematics tests, with students in Grades 5, 8, and 11 also taking the science test. The tests will be administered at your student’s school or at an off-site location to be determined by the county or charter school.

The school will provide the testing dates for this year’s administration. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the school or the county board of education office.

For additional information on the WVASA, visit this site: https://wvde.us/academics/assessment/west-virginia-alternate-summative-assessment.

I respectfully request that you encourage your student to do their best on the WVASA this spring.

Sincerely,

Michele L. Blatt
