Child Abuse Prevention Program Article and Photos: John Armstrong -- The Pleasants County Committee on Family Issues headed by Debbie Thompson was held at St. Marys Elementary school on Friday, May 1, 2026. The program was originally scheduled to be on the Courthouse steps on Thursday, April 30 but was postponed because of the rainy weather. Mrs. Thompson heads up the Pleasants County FRN (Family Resource Network) and places the Pin Wheeles that you see all around Pleasants County to remind everyone that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The program honors all those children who have lost their lives to abuse and draws awareness for continued efforts towards prevention. One of the highlights of the annual event is the releasing of Monarch Butterflies by the children. This year the 2nd grade teachers, their student teacher and their aides helped each student create a set of Butterfly wings to wear to the event. The kids looked awesome and the looks on their faces when they released the Butterflies was priceless!

180-Day Waiver Request:  Please be advised that we applied for a waiver with WVDE for some of our school cancellations. *The waiver request has been approved by the WVDE.  This means that due to the state-wide severe weather (state of emergency) in January, we do not have to make up some of the days that were missed. SPRING BREAK Spring Break for students will continue to be observed as originally scheduled: Monday, March 30, 2026 – Tuesday, April 7, 2026, for students. Staff only will return on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, for a Professional Learning Day. Students will return to school on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL We anticipate that Friday, May 22, 2026, will be the last day for students.  However, this is contingent on any additional “inclement weather” days that may occur. *The number of days requested are waived, provided this does not result in the last day of school occurring before the originally approved student end date.
