The 8th grade Spanish students were learning body parts vocabulary words in Spanish, and completed an "Ojo de Dios" as an extension activity! "Ojo de Dios" translates to "Eye of God". Like some Native American tribes make dream catchers, the "Ojo de Dios" was traditionally made by Native Americans in the northwestern part of Mexico. It is made to bring prosperity and blessings on the families and communities of those who make and have them

Pleasants County Middle School RECEIVES STEM GRANT FROM TOSHIBA AMERICA FOUNDATION FOR $1,294 Belmont, WV (February 14th, 2024) – Pleasants County Middle School is pleased to announce it has received a $1,294.00 STEM grant from the Toshiba America Foundation (TAF). These funds will support the STEM Class Rocket Design and Geometry Project. Mr. Dustin Bell’s and Mr. John Mike Nichols’ STEM students will each receive an Estes Viking Rocket. Students will get to design and create their rocket by choosing from 48 different fin configurations. During launch day, students will use Estes Mini AltiTrack Altitude Trackers to measure the angle of the launch and then record that data along with that rocket’s fin configuration. After all rockets have been launched, the STEM classes will learn the geometry required to calculate the height of each rocket. The students will then group that data by the different fin configurations to determine if the fin configurations affect height of the rocket, and if so, by how much. At the conclusion of the project, students will get to keep their rocket and take it home. “STEM education at Pleasants County Middle School is something that we take great pride in. Mr. Bell applied for a grant through Toshiba America Foundation to receive funding for Estes Viking Rockets. Mr. Bell recognizes the importance of hands-on learning, working as a team, and connecting learning to real-life examples. When students learn to grasp technology and associated concepts, we are equipping them for the current and future society, Mrs. Kayla Spitzer, principal.” Toshiba America Foundation’s grants fund projects designed by individual classroom teachers. This “direct-to-teacher” approach brings immediate results. Teachers are able to change the way they teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects because the grant supports equipment for hands-on experiments and inquiry-based approaches to the curriculum. At TAF, we believe that STEM is a lot more fun than just reading a textbook. TAF grants provide teachers with the tools they need to be more effective educators. The grants make the classroom a more exciting place for both teachers and students. About Toshiba America Foundation Founded in 1990 with support from Toshiba Corporation and the Toshiba America Group Companies, Toshiba America Foundation (TAF) is a non-profit grant making organization dedicated to helping classroom teachers make STEM learning fun and successful for K to 12 students in U.S. schools. TAF grants support public and nonprofit private schools throughout the United States. For more information, please visit: www.toshiba.com/taf.
