Science of reading

This year, (and in the previous two school years) you may have heard the term "Science of Reading."

The "Science of Reading" is the method we use to teach reading, along with the rest of the state. West Virginia code defines the Science of Reading as

“Evidenced-based reading instruction including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency,  vocabulary and comprehension plus writing.”

It focuses on two parts, "Early Literacy (grades PK-3)" and "Reading Instruction (all grade levels.)"

There are five components in the SoR known as the "Five Pillars" which include:

1. Phonemic Awareness- a child's ability to identify the different sounds that makeup speech.

2. Phonics- a child's ability to match sounds to letters or letter groups

3.  Fluency- a child's ability to read accurately and quickly (or efficiently.)

4. Vocabulary- a child's ability to understand what words mean, and the ability to use those words.

5. Comprehension- a child's ability to translate words to ideas and understand what they read.

The research for the science of reading is not one piece of research, but multiple pieces that have been studied and collected over a period of approximately 60 years.
