Solar Eclipse Guidance and Considerations

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a rare event will occur and we will experience a solar eclipse!

Pleasants County Schools will operate on a regular schedule on Monday, April 8, 2024. The timing of the eclipse will occur near the end of the instructional day and as students are dismissed. Our goal is to keep everyone safe during this time. Our school staff will be reminding students of safety protocols such as not looking at the sun without eclipse glasses.

Please help us in educating your child about the dangers of looking at the sun during an eclipse and the importance of protecting their eyes.

------

Pleasants County Schools has developed precautionary protocols for dismissal on April 8.

• There will be no recess or outside activities of any kind (other than viewing the eclipse for educational purposes/ science classes with parent permission) between 12:30 PM and 4 PM

• Students should be encouraged to wear solar eclipse glasses anytime they are looking at the sun.

•Students wearing solar eclipse glasses to view the eclipse need to stand still and in one place due to the limited visibility of the glasses when not looking at the sun.

• Students who are picked up in a vehicle or ride a school bus will not be released from the inside school building until their transportation has arrived. (We will keep our dismissal lines inside until the bus or vehicle is ready for them.)

• Bus drivers will remind students to not look at the sun directly when exiting the bus without solar eclipse glasses and will remind students not to wear their solar eclipse glasses when exiting the bus due to the limited visibility. (so they don't trip on the steps, etc.)

After-School Athletic and Activity Practices will not be held outside until after 4 PM.

Attendance Protocols:

•Picking up your child early from school (2 PM or after) as an additional precaution or to view the eclipse will be permitted. If you plan to do so, please send a note with your child, or call the school ahead of time so their teacher can make sure they are ready.

Please contact your child's teacher or principal if you have any further questions.
